Starting a new job always comes with surprises. For Justice Felipe and Thuy Jacobson, two newer physical therapists at Renew Physical Therapy, their transition has been full of rewarding experiences, supportive colleagues, and memorable patient moments that reaffirm why they love what they do.
A Welcoming Culture & Dedicated Patients
One of the first things Justice noticed was the dedication of his patients.
“The biggest surprise has been how great the patient population is,” he shared. “Most of my patients are hardworking and a joy to treat. Working with motivated individuals who truly want to improve makes each session fulfilling.”
For Thuy, it was the culture at Renew that stood out.
“From day one, everyone was welcoming—not just friendly, but genuinely willing to share their expertise,” she said. “It’s such an open and collaborative team, and just as fun as they are smart.”
Having that kind of environment has made a huge difference in how she grows as a clinician.
Moments That Reinforce Why We Love This Work
Every physical therapist has those moments—the ones that remind them why they chose this profession. For Justice, it was seeing a patient regain the ability to exercise pain-free after years of discomfort. “When we reached the point where I could discharge them, they were incredibly happy and grateful. That moment reinforced why I love being a PT.”
Thuy is currently working with a patient for whom running is more than just exercise—it’s meditation and stress relief.
“After their injury and surgery, they were devastated at the thought of not running for at least four months,” she explained. “Now, as we approach that milestone, they’re starting agility drills, and I can see the excitement and energy returning. It gets me so amped to take them through to the finish line—pun not intended—because I can tell they see the light at the end of the tunnel.”
Thriving at Renew: The Mindset That Makes a Difference
So what does it take to thrive at Renew Physical Therapy? According to Justice, it comes down to empathy, compassion, and a growth mindset.
“Understanding your patient’s pain is key, but so is the willingness to keep learning and staying on top of research.”
Thuy agrees and adds a few more essentials: “Be generous with your knowledge, be open to new perspectives, and communicate clearly—not just with patients, but with your team. That includes voicing your own needs and concerns.”
Advice to Our Past Selves
Looking back at their first weeks, both Justice and Thuy have advice they’d give to themselves.
Justice’s is simple: “Don’t rush. Focus on what you can control.”
For Thuy, it’s a reminder of worth. “You are an asset. Everyone has something special to contribute—you do as well. Be open and trust that you will do your best.”
At Renew, every physical therapist brings something unique to the table, and the journey of learning, growing, and making an impact never stops. For Justice and Thuy, that journey has been full of meaningful patient breakthroughs, strong team support, and an ever-deepening passion for the profession.
