Spring is here, flowers are blooming, and the sun is out, which means many of us will be spending more time in the yard.  Seasonal outdoor chores like mowing the lawn, shoveling mulch, and gardening can provide plenty of health benefits, but not without the risk of injury. Using proper body mechanics can help prevent the chances of getting hurt.

At Renew Physical Therapy, we share five easy tips to maintain proper body mechanics while doing yard work:

  1. Warm Up Your Body and Muscles: Taking a walk and stretching your arms, legs and back can reduce post-yard work soreness or injury. 
  2. Avoid Hunching Your Shoulders: We know, it is easier said than done! But, keeping your shoulders back and down while performing yard work can prevent strain on your shoulders and upper back.
  3. Avoid Using Your Back: Much like lifting weights in the gym, when you are lifting or bending in the yard, use your hips and knees rather than your back. Improving your posture this way will reduce fatigue lower back muscles that can lead to back injuries.
  4. Engage Your Core: The core is a key component to lower back health. Keeping your core muscles tight as you work will help straighten your spine, preventing back injury.
