Whether you are in the carpool lane with your kids, or a student yourself, taking care of your body and using the proper mechanics can help with a pain-free school year.

Renew Physical Therapy shares 4 tips for a healthy school year:

  1. Sitting Posture: Being in class and studying at home can bring in hours of prolonged sitting. Sit up against your chair with your back straight and shoulders back to support your muscles.
  2. Take Breaks: Breaks from sitting are recommended at least once an hour. Get up from your chair, stretch and walk around to increase blood flow and reduce muscle fatigue. 
  3. Don’t Overload: Laptops, textbooks, and school supplies are heavy. Do not overload or carry your backpack on one shoulder to prevent distorting the natural curves in your back and spine. 
  4. Maintain Fitness: Injury is best prevented when the body is kept healthy and strong. Focus on strengthening your back muscles to prevent back pain and spine injuries.
